Turtle Points Wildlife Center

Some kindness begins with one small moment.

For Ben, it began with a turtle in the road, a worried heart, and the belief that helping something smaller than himself mattered. His Turtle Points Logbook became more than a notebook. It became a way to notice the good, remember the helpers, and show that even the smallest act of care can leave a lasting mark.

The Turtle Points Wildlife Center continues that mission through Lily, a young volunteer who wants to help animals in need but must first learn what it means to truly help. At the wildlife center, Lily discovers that kindness is not always loud, exciting, or easy to see. Sometimes kindness is folding towels, washing bowls, making a quiet sign, listening to safety rules, giving a frightened animal space, or waiting patiently while trained adults do careful work.

As Lily helps at the center each week, she learns that wild animals need respect, safety, and gentle care. Turtles, baby birds, rabbits, and other creatures all have stories worth noticing. Some arrive scared or injured. Some need quiet rooms and soft bedding. Some grow strong enough to return to nature. Each one teaches Lily that caring for wildlife is not about keeping animals close—it is about helping them heal so they can go home.

Small Acts, Big Hearts

A few weeks after Lily’s first volunteer season ended, a small envelope arrived in Grandpa Jim’s mailbox.

It was pale green, with a turtle sticker pressed carefully in the corner.

Grandpa Jim brought it to the kitchen table and smiled when he saw Lily’s name written across the front.

“For you,” he said.

Lily looked up from her snack. “For me?”

Grandpa Jim nodded and handed it to her.

Lily opened the envelope slowly. Inside was a photograph from the Turtle Points Wildlife Center. It showed the Things That Count board covered with paper turtles, birds, leaves, rabbits, and notes from volunteers.

Right in the middle was Lily’s final note:

Kindness belongs everywhere.

Behind the photograph was a handwritten message from Ms. Harper.
